This song is about the chemical disaster at a UNION CARBIDE factory in Bhopal just after midnight on the 3rd December 1984. Thousands of homeless, very large and very poor communities lived directly outside the chemical plant and woke to the cloud of toxic gases which covered the city.
Due to financial cuts safety alarms were switched off and the tanks containing the deadly MIC gases were not properly maintained. It is claimed up to 10,000 lives were lost that night and hundreds of thousands continue to be affected by the poison.
UCC Chairman and CEO Warren Anderson was arrested but skipped bail to the US and has never been brought to justice.
When you wake with a burn in your throat
When you try to breathe and you choke
One by one the pipes explode
Don't be scared
We're only human after all
We're only human
Only human, aren't we?
We're only you and me
We're only human
They will keep us from harm
So turn off the silent alarms
Napalm as the city sleeps
Don't be scared
They're only human after all
They're only human
Only human, aren't we?
Only you and me
We're only human
Just trying to be
