Saying About You

from Illustrators by Illustrators

/

about

This is a song about desire and jealousy.

It is written from two perspectives: the verse is an mix of voices - bullies, controllers and abusers who enjoy to watch other people fall. The chorus is from the perspective of a neutral observer who looks on, sympathetic but passive.

The girl herself is the centre-piece of the story yet she is never named: she is anyone who has something that others might want – maybe she’s clever, beautiful, famous, healthy. The narrator sees the gossipers and vultures on one side and their target on the other and shakes her head; imagine if this poor girl did know what was being said about her…

lyrics

I would be good for you
Just as I am
If you knew what's good for you
Maybe you'd understand

I want you to want me
So much it hurts
You're such a pretty thing
Face-down in the dirt

Girl if you knew
What they're saying about you, saying about you

I would be good for you
Like the back of my hand
And if I can't be good for you
Then no one else can

You're perfect and paper-thin
Damned and defiled
Looks like she's losing it
Come on and give us a smile

Girl if you knew
What they're saying about you, saying about you

Girl, if they knew you
Girl, if they knew you
Girl, if they knew you
Girl, if they knew you at all...
